There has been a rumour doing the rounds over the past few days, pretty much setting certain parts of the internet alight. Originally posted at Canon Rumours, the rumour site is fairly confident that Canon’s C-log is coming to the 5D Mark IV. If true this would be a big deal.
Despite being a capable camera whatever way you look at it, the 5D Mark IV has received a lot of criticism of its video features, especially compared to the competition from Sony. Adding C-Log to the camera would certainly go a long way to addressing some of that criticism. While Canon probably can’t address issues like the crop factor for 4K in firmware, adding the companies highly regarded log profile, would make it more attractive to people looking for a video solution, who are invested in the Canon eco system and don’t want to change.
I hope that if this does become a reality that Canon doesn’t stop there, but also addresses the other major complaint that people had with the camera’s video, and that is the outdated motion jpeg file format. I think if they can address these two issues the 5D Mark IV will be much closer to what a lot of Canon users had hoped the camera would be before it was officially announced, at least in terms of video.
